The Eye of Ra or Eye of Re in ancient Egyptian mythology is a force that functions as a feminine counterpart to the Egyptian God of Creation, Ra. It is a restorative force that subdues the enemies of Ra (negative vices such as hate, greed, lies, immorality, oppression etc.). It represents the actualization of the inevitable defeat of the enemies of Ra throughout time and space. The eye is an extension of Ra’s power, equated with the disk of the sun, but it often behaves as an independent force that is interwoven into creation through universal laws often represented by a feminine principal or goddess. This goddess can be equated with several particular deities, including HetHeru, Sekhmet, Bastet, Raet-Tawy, and Mut. This aspect of the feminine principal in relation to Ra, manifests as a mother, sibling, consort, and daughter of the Egyptian God of creation and sustainer of that creation (Ra). She represents the sustaining life-force energy itself and therefore is his partner in the creative cycle in which he begets the renewed form of himself that is born at dawn. The eye’s burning aspect defends Ra against the agents of disorder and entropy that threaten the sustainment of Creation (the world of time and space). This regenerative and renewal aspect of the eye goddess is often represented by a lioness or by the uraeus, or cobra, a symbol of protection and royal authority. The Eye of Ra is similar to the Eye of Heru, which represents the restorative process that humanity must undergo in order to overcome the enemies of RA (those behaviors that leads to the destruction and demise of Creation) within the personality. The eye of Ra concept encapsulates the disastrous ramifications that naturally ensue as a direct result of men and women choosing to live life in a manner in which they align themselves with the enemies of Ra (entropy, destruction, demise, ruin, vice etc.).
